All breeds can be great with children, but some can ‘tolerate’ them whatever age they are. Dogs are amazing with kids as they can grow up together and ultimately become ‘playmates’. Whether you have children or are planning on having them, then these are the top breeds you should consider so they become their “sibling” more than “pet”…

Boxers have some great qualities, but one that really stands out is their love for children. They are a very ‘people-orientated’ breed. Boxers are also very affectionate, energetic and playful and with kids around they’re both going to be getting lots of exercise all day long!
hey may seem like a giant at first, but Mastiff’s are really friendly. They bond instantly with families and they absolutely love to be around people. You’ll find that they’re really gentle with children, and another great quality is that if they feel their ‘pack’ or in other words their family, is threatened they can knock an intruder down until assistance arrives.

Old English Sheepdog

The Old English Sheepdog is known as a working dog, and is always seen as loving and affectionate. They have got an instinct to heard, so don’t be scared when he runs around the school playground rounding up all the kids! The best way to describe an Old English Sheepdog is that they’re very athletic but filled with a very ‘clownish’ energy.
When most people think about a ‘family/children friendly’ dog breed they go straight to a Labrador Retriever, and here’s why; they are always so bouncy, playful and always enjoys being around their family. They love to run everywhere, but don’t mind a paddle in the water either. You could definitely depend on this breed to wear your children out every day!

Labrador Retriever

Golden Retriever

This breed is ever so energetic, friendly and always active, but these are only a few words to describe this brilliant breed, in fact they are one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Golden Retrievers are also very intelligent, and you’ll see them amongst children in lots of popular TV shows and movies, which shows just how great they are.
Don’t let their size intimidate you, these dogs are gentle giants and are perfect family dogs. They want nothing more but to play with the kids all day being their energetic and playful self’s.

Mixed Breeds

You can’t forget about the mixed breeds! There’s so many to choose from, and they all having a loving nature and juts want to be played with all day long! When picking out your mixed breed, try to choose one that is mid to large in size as this is normally better for a family environment.
These beautiful dogs are very people orientated and always love to have fun and play – they are a great addition. Their favourite thing to do is to run around all day showing their energetic personalities, then making themselves cosy at night with the family. Dalmatians are also a great match if you own horses as their known to have a good, symbiotic relationship with horses.

Beagles are so much fun! There small to medium size which is great especially if you have younger kids. They’re also known to be very energetic and very friendly. Beagles make great family pets as they’re great active companions and bond easily.

Hudson is incredible on his Gencon and over the months his confidence has increased and his anxiety lessened. The Gencon ensures no pulling and no lunges. Our walks are an absolute pleasure. I have complete confidence in the Gencon and have recommended it to a number of people.

Max, my ESS is still a puppy but weighs 16kg already so walking him is a struggle. A lady recommended I buy a Gencon lead. She has an active Cocker Spaniel and it was an “Instant” relief walking her dog. Oh my goodness, I cannot believe how true her words are of “Instant”. We’ve been on a walk & I’ve come back with my arms in their sockets still! This will make a huge difference for both Max & myself. This is a massive game changer!

Here at Woodside, we use the Gencon all-in-1 with clip to collar. We have found them simple to use and very effective at controlling any size dog. Most dogs accept the Gencon quickly with little fuss, making training so much easier. Gencon’s are now part of our uniform and we recommend them to any new owner taking home one of our four legged friends.

The Gencon extra wide head collar is a brilliant piece of kit. Using it has transformed my headstrong flatcoat into a manageable dog who walks demurely by my side. There is no pressure and just the lightest contact, so we can enjoy on lead walking instead of an unseemly battle.
