What is the difference between your All-In-One Dog Headcollar and your Clip to Collar Dog Headcollar?

Our All-In-One and Clip-to-Collar headcollars work in the same way as each other. The only difference is our Clip-to-Collar features an additional Trigger Hook at the handle end. This can either be attached to your dog’s main collar for two-handed control or short lead work or you can attach to a metal ring just below to form a handle

What size headcollar should I get for my dog?

Our All-In-One and Clip-to-Collar headcollars are adjustable to fit most sizes. However, we also have a range of headcollars that can fit a variety of breeds. Our Gencon Dog Headcollar comes in sizes Small to size Extra Large. We also have a Mini All-In-One Dog Headcollar for smaller dogs and have recently launched an extra-wide version of our headcollar.

How do I fit my Gencon collar properly?

In order to work most effectively, the collar needs to be fitted correctly. If the pressure is being applied correctly to the dog, it will pick up loose lead walking far quicker. We have put together a guide to help you ensure that your pup is able to benefit just as much as you. We work with a handful of brilliant trainers here at Gencon, so you can be sure of our headcollar’s effectiveness.

How do I stop my dog from pulling at the lead?

Make sure the headcollar is fitted correctly before lead training. This means that the gentle pressure being applied to the dog is applied in the correct place. Thus, working how it is designed to. It is also worth introducing your dog to the headcollar by associating it with something fun and exciting.

What do I do if my dog reacts adversely to putting on the headcollar?

It’s only natural that your dog may be unused to this new sensation and initially, may try to take the dog training lead off by pushing its front paws up over its nose. If this occurs, make sure to remain quiet, then apply gentle upward pressure and as soon as the dog stops, release the pressure immediately.

Under no circumstances should you scold the dog for trying to remove it, as we want to establish a positive association between the dog and the lead. If your dog is particularly nervous or over anxious then some extra practice at home may be required until you are both proficient with the dog training lead. We would also suggest offering your dog a treat when it remains calm when putting on its Gencon. This allows the dog to build a positive association with its new collar.

What is the difference between a slip lead and a clip lead?

A clip lead is a simple lead that can be clipped to your dog’s collar with a Trigger Hook. Although a clip lead can work well for most dogs, if your dog gets nervous or pulls, a slip lead can help train them to heel.

Slip leads look a lot like a normal clip lead, but with a metal ring on one end of the loop instead of a clip that goes over your dog’s head.

How does a slip lead work?

A slip lead should be placed around your dog’s neck and muzzle. There is no need for a collar, as slip lead wraps around your pooch’s head. As a result, you are left with more control, fewer pulls and happy walkies! Needs re-writing as it is a legal requirement for a dog to wear a collar in a public place.

How can I get my dog used to a head collar?

Most dogs find it easy to adapt to a Gencon Headcollar, but if your furry friend is struggling to relax, then there are a few things you can do to help them get used to it.

Start by introducing them to the collar and letting them get used to having it around them. It may be best if you put it on for a few minutes every day in the home. You can also read more advice on acclimatising your dog to its headcollar here.
