How To Put On A Harness

Follow our simple guide to fit your Gencon Harness

Enjoy the benefits of our harnesses, whether you are dealing with an enthusiastic puller or you’re looking for a more enjoyable way to enjoy the outdoors together. Using this guide you can ensure that your harness is on correctly, providing your dog with the unparalleled combination of comfort, control and style.

In order to ensure your harness is on correctly, the first step is to establish what size harness is best for your dog. Refer to our videos below along with our size guide to make sure your furry friend is in the right size harness.

Although fitting our Gencon Airmesh or Walk-through harness is instinctive by nature, we are all aware that anything new for you and your dog requires a bit of practice. The process for each harness is slightly different, so take a look below to see how you should be putting your harness on your dog.

The Airmesh Harness

The airmesh harness features an easy over-the-head fitting, then feeding the two straps behind the dogs front legs, clipping into the receiving clasp on their back. This should leave you with a clip on both their chest and their back, but make sure to refer to our photos and videos to check it’s on correctly!

The Walk-through Harness

Putting your walk-through harness on your dog is designed to be fast and simple, however, like anything it’s best to practise inside first. When unclipped and holding a clasp in each hand, there should be two clear gaps for your dog’s legs to go through. Once they are in, clip the clasps together and adjust the straps so that the clasp sits comfortably on their back. Checking the harness is the right way round is key to ensuring your dog is comfortable.

A good way to tell the correct orientation is by the buckle on the underneath strap. The end with the buckle and fastener should be on the dog’s belly, with the other end moving freely along the strap going across your dog’s chest. Please refer to our photos and videos to check that the harness has been put on correctly!

As we mentioned previously, we recommend practising with your harness at home, ideally when your dog is calm and has already been exercised. Similarly to our headcollars, we advise that you always associate the new harness with something positive for your dog. An example of this could be fitting your harness while your dog is eating or simply delivering a treat or a toy if your dog doesn’t react. Ultimately, your dog will then associate their harness with future walks, providing sufficient motivation.
